"We Have a Wizard in the Family!"

"We have a wizard in the family!"

Well, sort of.  [insert smiley face here]  Although our little Oliver will undoubtedly be "muggle born" ... he will certainly be dwelling in a place fit for a bona fide Hogwart's-bound wizard.

I have finally finished decorating what, if I do say so myself, just might be the most spectacular and unique baby nursery of all time.  I know, I'm being modest.

Call us crazy ... but before baby Oliver was even conceived, Justin and I decided to create a "Harry Potter" themed nursery for our second child.  And oh what fun the process has been.  Although we've been working on this special space since I was about 21 weeks pregnant ... it wasn't until this weekend that the finishing touches were put into place.  And, if you know anything at all about me, you know that I wasn't about to share photographs until every tiny detail was complete.  This nursery design was definitely a lot more complicated than a trip to Babies R Us for bedding and wall art; however, the finished result was absolutely worth the trouble of scavenging for everything Potter-esque.

So with the help of Lowes, Etsy, a broom crafter, eBay, Amazon, Cracker Barrel, WalMart, Michaels, Babies R Us, Hobby Lobby, Pier One, Target, antique dealers, Ross, Universal Studios and a couple of yard sales ... we have a genuine masterpiece!  I hope you like it as much as we do!

Note that the ceiling "matches the sky" like that in the Great Hall of Hogwarts.

Oliver's owl.

The only way to enter Oliver's nursery: through Platform 9 & 3/4.

These are all personal photographs taken during our trip to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios in Orlando.

Oliver's highly-stocked closet ... complete with Harry Potter and Ron Weasley's wands above it ... and the Knight Bus inside.

Remember this circa 1872 trunk from a previous post?

Probably my favorite element of the nursery: the handcrafted broom used as a curtain rod!

I'm also so very proud of the canvas art behind this glider because it was created from a photograph of our own collection of Rowling's epic novels ... taken by me!  I can't wait to read to Oliver in this chair.
(please also note the adorable miniature cauldron on the red shelf ... hehe)

It's finally complete!

Now, all we have to do is sit back ... relax ... and wait to see if Oliver is as big of a Harry Potter fan as we clearly are ... in about 12 years or so!

Hi i really love this room and i would love to create a room similar. I was just wondering where you got the 93/4 sign above the door? also the linen in the gryffindor colours where did that come from? And the decals did you purchase them somewhere or have them made? if you can help me out by just letting me know where you got some of the awesome stuff in this room i would much appreciate it :)

Hi everyone! Thanks for all the comments about the nursery!

I hope you will all see this response ... and that I answer everything.

The broom came from a craft show ... however, I'm not sure of the name. I was able to find some online by searching for "hand crafted besom." Good luck!

The decals are from www.etsy.com from a vendor called Nothin' But Vinyl. He made them custom for me.

The bedding/mobile/blankets/hamper/diaper stacker is "Aiden" by Cocalo Couture. I ordered it on www.amazon.com. It just "happens" to look like HP ... not designed to look that way.

The letters are from Hobby Lobby. It is a craft/hobby store like Michael's that we have locally. I purchased them myself. The owl's cage is also from there. The large brass key is also from there.

The stuffed owl came from Cracker Barrel.

The owl canvas print came from Pier One.

The frames are from various stores like Ross, TJ MAxx, etc.

The wands, scarf, and actual photographs are from The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando. I took those myself.

The Platform 9 3/4 sign is from www.amazon.com.

We painted the ceiling ourselves.

The vintage trunk is an actual "vintage trunk" that I purchased from a 93 year old man who refinishes them. Is is SO NEAT ... it has decals inside from an old hotel that burnt down in the late 1800s. Very cool!!! It came those colors!

I think that's all! Good luck! Glad we are inspiring you! :)

Oh ... and the mini cauldron is from ebay.com

And the HUGE canvas of the novels that is behind the rocking chair I from me! I'm a photographer. I took the photo and had a canvas made from my lab. If you are interested in a copy of that, I would be able to order it for you.

Wonderful job. You inspired me of doing a series of geeky nurseries DIY projects. As a first post, I'm featuring your nursery at my website randomtuesdays.com

Love this idea for a nursery, maybe for my next baby. Question where did you get your furniture (the big pieces)? I have the same tall dresser and a night stand but I love the shorter dresser. Mine are older how about yours? Thank you for the ideas.

I just wanted to let you know that your HP Nursery inspired me to make that my nursery theme for my first born. I hand made most of my decorations and had my MIL make my blanket and curtains.

I have some pictures that I wanted to share, but I don't think I can attach them to the comments.

I wanted to let you know that your Harry Potter nursery inspired me to also do an HP Nursery for my first born. I made most of my stuff because there really isn't any HP nursery decorations out there.

I wanted to share some pictures but I don't think that you can post them here.

Anyway, thank you for the idea. I also hope my son enjoys Harry Potter as much as I do!

I am so impressed by this! I'm not sure I have the skill to make that ceiling happen (or that amazing photo of the books), but would you mind sharing what the wall color is?

JenHeath said...

Thanks Katie!

The wall color was just an existing household color on all of our walls. I think is was something like "sand." Basically, a very light brown/tan. The ceiling was SUPER easy. My husband rolled a nice sky blue on with a roller ... and we let it dry completely. Then, I used natural sea sponges to dab on the clouds in random shapes myself. Only took a couple of hours, voila! The photo of the books is my own. I'm a photographer (www.favoritethingsphotography.com). I can always order you a print or a canvas of the HP books (like me) if you're interested in purchasing. Let me know. :) Happy decoration!

I love the crib bedding that you used! Where did you get it?

Anonymous said...

Hello, I love the nursery and am trying to create a similar look. Where did you purchase the crib bedding set? Thank you Nicole

What a lovely nursery, if I ever have a baby I might be back to copy some ideas. I love everything about this room, you creative genius.

Unknown said...

PLEASE PLEASE tell me where you found that bedding... I've been dying to find one like it but have no luck!

JenHeath said...

Isora. Thank for for the compliment. The name of the bedding is "Aiden" by Cocolo Couture". It's on older (2009) set - so maybe someplace like eBay or Amazon would be best now! Good luck.
